Why Isn’t My Dishwasher Draining?

If you’re managing a busy household and rely on your dishwasher to take care of the bulk of the washing up, you might start to panic if you see water collecting in the bottom of your appliance – or even spilling over – once the last cycle is complete.

My dishwasher won’t drain, what should I check for?

Problem Solution
Is the filter blocked? You can find the filter inside your dishwasher at the bottom. These can usually be pulled out or twisted and removed. Get rid of any buildup or debris, rinse under the tap and replace.
Is there a blockage in the waste hose? The waste hose is at the back of your appliance. Simply turn the appliance off at the mains, then disconnect the hose and then blow through it to clear any blockages before reattaching.
Did the cycle complete? This might be difficult to detect, but it is possible an electrical fault caused the cycle to be interrupted. Either find a button to reestablish the drain cycle or reset the whole process.
Is the door clicking shut properly? The appliance may not drain if the door has come loose during the cycle. Ensure you push the door firmly and feel it click shut before restarting the appliance cycle.
Is your sink drain pipe blocked? If your dishwasher pipe is connected up to the sink waste pipe, ensure that it is not this pipe that has become blocked. You can buy dedicated cleaning products to unblock your sink drain pipes.

How can I stop this issue from recurring?

There are a few things you can do to try and eliminate some of these common dishwasher draining issues. Firstly, if you find your filter gets blocked regularly, try scraping plates and bowls clean before putting them in the dishwasher. This will mean less food getting clogged in your drain. Also, consider where your dishwasher is positioned, you might want to leave a little more room for your dishwasher hose to ensure it does not become kinked.
The best way to keep your dishwasher free from any type of fault, however, is to have regular, professional servicing from a dedicated expert.
